Writing in the back of the case of this 1/9 plate tintype seems to read: "James W____less C___ War". Scratched into the emulsion
above the soldier's head is "Jim". Whether this is brother and sister or son and mother is impossible to say. Prelim research suggests
that this might be James W. Wanless who enlisted with the 31st VA Inf on 5/28/1861. He enlisted at Green Bank, WV (VA at the time) and was
from Pocahontas County, VA. If this is him, he was wounded twice (McDowell, VA and The Wilderness) and captured at Fort Stedman, VA. Both
the soldier's and the female's tins are trimmed a bit narrow than a standard 1/9 plate. The condition is a bit dark with some surface damage as
can be seen in the scan. The images come in a full thermoplastic case that has seen better days. #2065=$425.00
