A clear, bright 1/6th plate ambrotype of 1st Lieutenant John W. Hughey, Company B, 54th Georgia Infantry. He is wearing an eight
button frock coat with clear collar rank insignia. All the buttons have been gilted but one button that shows some details of a
device. In Hughey's service records, there is a receipt for eight staff officer buttons he had purchased. It is likely that the
button that showing detail is a staff officer eagle button with stars on the outside. His 1st Lt. rank can be seen by the two bars
on each side of his collar. Hughey originally enlisted in Savannah on Apr 21, 1861 as a 2nd Sgt. in Company K, 1st Brigade, Georgia
State Troops. In April of 1862, Company K was mustered out of the Georgia State Troops. He then enlisted in Company B, 54th GA and was
promoted to sergeant and then elected to 1st Lt. on July 28, 1962. Parts of the 54th GA fought at Battery Wagner. In the case, is written
his rank, name, "Appling County" and the date "July 29, 1862" which is probably the day the image was taken after he received his promotion.
He was home on furlough when the war end. Hughey died sometime after 1910. One of the scans, I have used Photoshop 18 to show the image
without the spot to give the buyer a better idea of what the image probably originally looked like. The image is in a full leatherette case
that has been repaired at the spine. #CA1051=$1400.00
