Identified on the reverse at Levi Wertman, this CDV has a "David Baily, Photographer Tamaqua, PA" backmark. It also has a canceled
blue 2 cent Playing Card stamp. Wertman joined the 173rd PA infantry on 11/3/1862 and was discharged from that unit on 8/18/1863. This
was a 90 day unit and saw duty in Norfolk, in pursuit of Lee after Gettysburg and along the Orange & Alexandria railroad. A year and a
half later on 3/16/1865, he joined the 104th PA infantry and was discharged at Portsmouth, VA on 8/25/1865. In consideration of the tax
stamp, I'm guessing this image was taken while he was with the 104th PA Infantry. There is one area of damage on the obverse of the
image as can be seen in the scan. #1503=$165.00
