1/6 Tintype of a young soldier posed in front of an American flag. Based upon the star alignment on the canton, this appears to be either a 34 or 35 star flag. The uniform exhibits several identifying features. The jacket has no buttons, rather what appears to be a sewn in vest. The jacket has a red tinted design on his right breast pocket; appearing to be a clover. Additionally, there is red piping down the center of the vest and a red tinted cumber bun. There also are red tinted clovers on both of the thighs. Finally, and maybe most importantly, close inspection indicates a green tassel on the left breast (his left breast) which has purposely been placed there for the photograph. It is claimed that the 164th had green tassels on their fezzes to show off their proud Irish heritage (reference "Uniforms of the Civil War" by Robin Smith and Ron Field page 112). The 164th was a hard fought unit seeing action on the Peninsula, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor and Petersburg (among others). The regiment suffered 12.5% killed or mortally wounded. The image is a bit dark and has some emulsion unevenness. The image comes in a full leatherette case that has been repaired at the spine. #3895=$875.00
