With the epaulettes on his shoulders, this is clearly a very early war image. The knit cap has a brass eagle device, what appears to be crossed sabers and the
number "1" in this 1/6 plate ruby glass ambrotype. The trooper sports an Officer of the Day sash that has been lightly tinted. And, although the buttons have been
heavily gilded, there appears to be Massachusetts buttons with the raised saber motif on a couple under the sash where the photographer got a bit casual in his gilding.
The image is so well focused, that under a loop a viewer can actually see the reflection of the large box camera and skylight in the troopers eyes. There is no I.D. with this
ambrotype and it comes in a full leatherette case that has its original spine.
