On April 18, 1942 James Doolittle led 16 B-25s to bomb targets in Tokyo and other major Japanese cities. It was one of the most dramatic propaganda coups of the war. This daring feat gave hope and optimism to the Allies whountil this time had experienced few victories. The pilots and crew who participate in the mission became known as the Doolittle Raiders. This raid had been considered a suicide mission and all 80 participants had to volunteer. 74 returned. 8 x 10 B&W photo of the Doolittle Raiders standing before their planes.
